ZEISS has equipped the Wolfsburg Planetarium with a new generation of video projectors for 360 degree projection. After thirteen years of reliable first-generation ZEISS VELVET projectors, the planetarium can now utilize projectors with modern LED technology. The new ZEISS VELVET LED projectors offer a very high color brilliance with the best contrast worldwide of 1:2.5 million. Thanks to the significantly higher resolution, visitors now experience a sharper and more detailed image.
"After modernizing our Starmaster two years ago and replacing the ZEISS VELVET projectors, the Wolfsburg Planetarium is one of the most cutting-edge planetariums in Europe," reports Eileen Pollex, the planetarium's general manager. "The technology of the ZEISS VELVET projectors was specifically developed for planetariums and simulators – both areas where extremely high contrast is important," explains Martin Kraus, Head of the Planetariums unit at ZEISS. "In less than three years, we were able to equip 23 planetariums with the new VELVET LED projectors. For our customers, this upgrade not only entails more brilliant projection, but also significant energy and cost savings."
ZEISS had already brought the star projector, ZEISS STARMASTER, up to date in 2021. The star projectors and fulldome projection can now display astronomical and scientific simulations under the Wolfsburg Planetarium's dome in a particularly realistic way. The new technology was inaugurated in a ceremony with selected guests. The first visitors were able to experience the new projection quality in two sold-out concerts by Giorgio Claretti in the planetarium. The grand public reopening will take place on Friday, 10 March 2023.
The Wolfsburg Planetarium and ZEISS have a long history together. In 1978, Volkswagen AG acquired, among other things, a ZEISS SPACEMASTER planetarium projector from Jena in return for the delivery of 10,000 VW Golf to East Germany, and gifted it to the city of Wolfsburg. The planetarium by ZEISS from Jena opened in 1983 in Wolfsburg in West Germany. In 1996, the reunification of ZEISS East and West was already history when Wolfsburg received its new STARMASTER star projector, which also came from Jena.
