C/2021 A1 (Leonard) with Messier 3 This morning comet C/2021 A1 Leonard had a "close" approach to the bright cluster Messier 3. While it may look close, M3 is actually about 33,000 light years behind the comet. Comet C/2021 A1 Leonard is making its closest approach to Earth on December 13th at a distance of 21,390,000 miles. During this approach the comet will possibly become a naked eye comet from dark skies. Optical aids such as a small telescope or binoculars will provide a better view. Image Specifications: SkiesAway Falling Eagle Observatory Imaging comets is tricky as they are moving quickly against the background star field. The goal is to shoot several images quickly. Usually this means a color camera is needed as the comet will move between filter changes on a monochrome camera. For this image two identical systems were used. One with a monochrome camera and one with color. Each telescope shot at the same time allowing luminance to be applied over the one-shot color data and improve the over all detail of the image.
