REOPENING OF THE SHARJAH PLANETARIUM WITH NEW TECHNOLOGY FROM ZEISS

The planetarium at the Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Science, and Technology (SAASST) was officially reopened on May 10, 2023, by Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohamed al-Qassimi, ruler of the Emirate of Sharjah and member of the Supreme Council of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Sharjah is the capital of the emirate of the same name and the largest in the UAE with a population of more than one million. Eight years ago, the planetarium at the "Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Science, and Technology" (SAASST) was built. With a dome diameter of 18 m and 200 seats, it is one of the largest planetariums in the region.

ZEISS has recently equipped the planetarium with a 360-degree dome projection system ("fulldome"). Eight ZEISS VELVET LED digital projectors create a complete fulldome video image featuring the world’s highest contrast on the dome. One challenge for ZEISS was to incorporate the controls for the SAASST’s existing Japanese optical star projector into common control with the ZEISS UNIVIEW planetarium software. This allows the customer to operate and use the digital astronomical projections together with the starry sky of their optical planetarium projector.
