Este es un caso de Catasterismo, cuyo significado sería colocado entre las estrellas, refiriéndose a personajes de la mitología griega transformados en estrellas o constelaciones.
Según una versión se trataría de Lailaps ( también conocido como Laelaps ó Lélape ), un perro tan veloz que podía atrapar todo tipo de presa.
Fué un regalo de los dioses a los mortales, existiendo diferentes relatos sobre quién lo regalaba y quién lo recibía.
1.- La diosa Diana se lo regala a Procris.
2.- La diosa Diana se lo regala a Céfalo.
3.- Zeus se lo regala a Europa.
A Lailaps se le encomendó cazar al Zorro o Zorra de Teumesia, una criatura destinada a que nunca fuera atrapada, Zeus terminó convirtiendo a ambos en piedra para terminar con la eterna persecución de Lailaps a un Zorro o Zorra que jamás sería atrapada.
Según otra versión sería el perro dorado, el mastín de oro que la diosa Rea había enviado para que protegiera al infante Zeus y a su nodriza, la cabra Amaltea.
Cuando Zeus alcanzó la madurez, elevó al perro situándolo entre las estrellas, creando la constelación del Can Mayor.

A close up image using a small 6 inch F5 telescope on the evening of the 21st January. As the comet's nucleus has broken up, a lot of material has been put into the tail. Note the bright streak in the coma (head) of the comet. This is the debris from the breakup spreading out. Lots of great rays to be seen in the tail as well.

Comet C/2024 G3 (ATLAS) - a view from an Observatory. I took this image at the ESO Paranal Observatory on January, 19. The comet is setting in the twilight next to one of the auxiliary telescopes (AT). This time, I used a 70mm lens to capture the whole scene.
