Sunday, February 19, 2023, marks the 550th anniversary of the birth of Nicolaus Copernicus.
Did you know that 100 years ago, Oskar von Miller, the founder of the Deutsches Museum was investigating a technical method to illustrate the movements of celestial bodies to visitors? The Carl Zeiss Jena company provided a solution with the construction of a Copernican planetarium. The room-filling exhibit, inaugurated in 1924, completed the development of this mechanical planetarium.
A number of current planetariums, such as the planetarium in Torun, Poland, proudly bear the name of the famous astronomer. The Torun Planetarium has recently reopened with a brand new SKYMASTER ZKP 4 LED from ZEISS and celebrates the Nicolaus Copernicus anniversary with a show highlighting his achievements.
